Maintaining oral health while traveling #4

Many of our Dental Studio clients travel often for work, this throws the routine out the window and our usual brushing and flossing habits typically go with it. Not only are we out of routine, often traveling for work means back-to-back meetings, networking events and client dinners. All things that might be fine if at the end of the night you went home to your house and kept your nightly routine.

First and foremost, make sure you have your electric toothbrush with you. Most of the current electric brushes recommended by professionals now have travel cases with a usb port for charging. If it is going to be a quick two day trip then you can even wrap the brush head up in tissue to bring this and the base in your toiletries bag. All major brands of electric brushes will hold their change for a minimum of 2 days and some like Oral-B or Sonicare for up to two weeks.

Another important thing to remember is that, yes, we encourage flossing before you go to bed at the very end of the day. However, if you know you will be out late for dinners or meetings then floss before you go. There is no bad time to floss. It is ideal to floss right before bed but any time during the day is better than skipping all together.

A part of traveling for work means you need to be flexible. If you like to use a water floss but simply cannot fit your water flosser in your carry-on luggage for a short trip then bring interdental brushes or picks. If you aren’t sure what size then error on the smaller side, choose either .4mm or extra small sized for cleaning in between the teeth.

Most importantly, as soon as you get back home, get back into your normal routine. Don’t let traveling derail your good homecare.
